“For a while we were working flat out just on the data security aspect of our portals, and we were really pushing each other to find the best result, but all of a sudden, the solution became obvious. When such close collaboration is ultimately crowned with success, it's really fun!"

The Customer

With its two Munich sites, Campus Großhadern and Campus Innenstadt, LMU Hospital is one of the largest university hospitals in Germany and Europe. The Clinical Center of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU) is divided into 29 specialized clinics, 13 institutes and seven departments as well as 52 interdisciplinary centers, and the 1,800 physicians and 3,300 nursing staff treat 500,000 patients per year in approximately 2,000 beds. The hospital is one of the leading medical institutions nationally and internationally.

The Goal

The digitalized working day at LMU Kliniken includes “short distances for patients, specialists and staff, uncomplicated processes and minimal waiting times". A convenient online check-in is to be designed to unburden staff and reduce unnecessary waiting times for patients and their relatives. The goal is to make everyone's stay at the clinic as pleasant and straightforward as possible.

The Implementation

To date, numerous portals have been developed based on the JustRelate platform; these portals help drive forward the hospital’s digitalization. The handling of sensitive patient data in the portals and the hospital's inter- and intranet required a completely new, seamless security concept. Even the developers and administrators do not have access to this data. For data transmission, the hospital uses an innovative encryption concept that is secured in multiple ways and works with temporary, local passwords.

The Result

A new web platform was developed for the patients and physicians at the LMU Hospital. The platform enables online appointment scheduling as well as allowing the bidirectional exchange of patient data between physicians. Overall, digitalization has resulted in simplified processes and has made the hospital’s work easier. The web editors were pleased that no training was required thanks to the platform’s excellent usability and easy content editing. The team can dynamically develop both the platform and portals further, as changes are possible at any time and very easy to implement. This means the hospital is ready and prepared for future developments and technologies. In particular, the team likes the API-driven development and the agile way of working with various applications as it is fun and enables a quick response to any new requirements.
