The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) goes into force today, and it’s very important wherever you’re based to take action. Failure to be compliant has substantial financial penalties of €20m or 4% of global annual turnover (whichever is greater), which for some companies could be enough to force them into bankruptcy - don’t make this mistake.

Earlier this week, before the GDPR went into force, Greenwich University in London was fined £120,000 ($160,000) for a data breach of student information (BBC article). Should this have occurred now, the fines would of been substantially more, with the minimum penalty of €20 million. This breach shows the importance of taking data seriously in your organization.
